Debating

Last week 3R had an interesting and thought provoking debate. We decided to discuss whether children should be allowed to watch TV or play computer games on a school night. As you can see below the boys had many valid arguments both for and against:

For Against
Treat/reward for good behaviour Health issues: Stops you exercising, give you a headache
You can learn from documentaries nature, history Stops you focusing on other things such as homework
You can use the Internet for research Games can be addictive
Internet can teach you skills for future jobs Lose the art of communication- talking to parents, siblings, friends, playing with pets
Educational games eg maths games (learning x tables) Spend your time doing something more creative eg building lego, drawing
Useful information on the blog/school website that we need to read Spend your time doing something more creative eg building lego, drawing
Teaches children to take responsibility-limit own use Can stop you sleeping

The debate was conducted to get the boys used to speaking in large groups in readiness for their ESB examination which will take place next year.

In Maths we have been focusing on subtraction using the column method. We have looked at borrowing or exchanging when subtracting if we need to. We have also continued to develop our understanding of word problems.

In History the boys have labelled and designed Roman Villas and we are looking forward to our trip on Thursday to the Verulamium.

We have continued to read the next chapter from The Butterfly Lion; we have explored the themes and answered questions relating to the text.

In Science the boys have looked at how climate can affect what we can grow in this country and how we import a lot of fruit and vegetables we eat on a daily basis.

All the boys performed brilliantly in their Harvest Hope production last Friday; it was a super end to week!

First week in October

We began our week with a Pathways Assembly about Jonah and the Whale. The Pathways Team relied heavily on audience participation, the boys created the sound effects and helped to tell the story.

We have continued to focus on the column method for addition this week and the boys have shown that the are confident using this method. Next week we move onto the column method for subtraction.

The boys have read the next chapter from The Butterfly Lion and they have completed comprehension questions to show their understanding.

In R.E. this week we have learnt about Hinduism, the faith and the traditions.

Our Harvest Production is almost ready and we look forward to sharing this with you next Friday.
